2 x 12 Stair Stringers

 
 

2 x 12 stair stringers are the most common used in residential building. In the picture above you see the framing square laying out a 7 - 1/2 inch rise with a 10 inch tread. After the stringer is cut you will have between 5 and 6 inches of wood left on the stringer. This is the main support for the staircase and is sufficient for most residential home uses.
