I can't honestly remember the last time I asked myself
this question. How hard is it to build stairs? If I was going to use a
scale of 1 to 10, I would put it at an 8, if you have some carpentry or
framing experience. If you're a plumber, electrician for heating and
air-conditioning contractor, it's going to be a 10.
If you're a do-it-yourselfer and you've built similar projects like a
barn, minor structural repairs or even built a wall, this will bring you
back to level 8, for difficulty. It's not easy to build a set of stairs,
without instructions.
Most of the information I've found on the Internet, only provides you
with the bare essentials. I'm not about to suggest that you couldn't
build a set of stairs with the information provided on these websites.
However, if you don't have a lot of time, carpentry or house framing
experience, you could be looking at one of the most difficult projects
you're ever going to work on.
How Hard Is It to Build a Set of
Stairs? Let me see if I can put it into perspective for you. Do you
remember learning how to read and write in a different language or solve
difficult math problems? At first it was frustrating and difficult, but
after a while you started to get the hang of it.
Learning to build stairs was difficult for me at one time, but after a
while of working on different types of stairways, I figured out a way to
simplify the process. It became easier and easier, because I made each
step along the way, as simple as possible.
With 30 years of construction experience under my belt, my wife, some of
my friends and even a few of my family members, talked me into writing a
book on stair building. If anyone could simplify the process and create
a step by step stairway construction plan, I could.
It still took me a few more years, but I truly believe that I've
