Some building codes require exterior concrete stairs to
have warning linings for handicap people. Most of the time, these lines
are placed at the top and the bottom of the stairway. Whenever a
handicap (blind) person comes in contact with these lines, using a cane,
it tells them that they are near a ramp or stairway.
Example: The top level of the stairway, directly above the upper most
stair riser, should have stair step warning lines and the first step
should also have the same markings.
The building codes might have changed, because I'm starting to see these
concrete stair step warning lines on every stair tread and at the base
and summit of every handicap ramp.
