| Here is another one
of those stair building codes that could get confusing.
The minimum stair landing width is 44 inches. With some exceptions.
Low occupancy buildings have a minimum stair landing width of 36 inches.
Now what does this mean? Here's my best interpretation of this building
code. Private residences with less than 10 occupants can have a minimum
stair landing width of 36 inches. Public stairways with more than 50
occupants shall have a minimum stair landing width of 44 inches.
Example: The minimum stair landing width measurement
is going to be from the finish wall to the end of the stair nosing. In
the picture above, I'm showing two different sets of arrows. The lower
arrows represent one direction and the upper arrows represent the other
direction.
The lower arrow measurement for the minimum stair landing width in the
picture above will be from the face of the stair nosing on the first
step, off of the landing (step 2), to the finished wall (wallboard or
drywall).
The upper arrow measurement for the minimum stair landing width in the
picture above will be from the finished wall to the stair nosing, at the
end of the landing.
Remember, that a 44 inch minimum stair landing is the same as the
minimum stair width and allows two people to pass more comfortably, who
are walking in opposite directions, than a stairway or landing that's 36
inches.
Even though it's only 8 inches, this can make all the difference in the
world.
