A stair carriage is another word used by construction
workers that refers to the stair stringer. The stair carriage is the
main structural support for most stairways.

The stair stringer or carriage or even horse, believe
it or not, that's right, I worked with a carpenter who referred to the
stair stringers as a stair horse. I often imagined him riding away on
one of these structural components.
Come on, I was 16 years old and had a vivid imagination.
Carriages can be constructed out of wood or metal and can be created in
mass quantities, depending upon the size of the project. I used to work
on tract homes, where we would build over a hundred homes at one time.
One of my jobs was to cut all of the stair carriages required for the
assembly of the entire project. Sometimes it would take a few weeks,
just to cut all of the stair stringers, treads and risers, for one of
these large jobs.
So remember, the next time someone asked you to bring them a stair
stringer, you can respond with," you mean a stair carriage, don't you."
See if that confuses anyone.
