A dry run is when you pre-assemble a stairway. In other
words, it's an excellent way to double check your stair stringers and
other measurements. After you cut your first stair stringer, place it in
its proper position, just to make sure that everything is working
correctly.
The dry run method of stair construction, prevents you
from making additional mistakes. If you cut your first stair stringer
and there was something wrong, you could make the necessary adjustments,
before cutting the rest of the stringers.
I've been cutting and installing stairways for 30 years and still double
check all of my measurements, regularly, by using the dry run staircase
assembly method.
