The stair
headout is usually located within the upper floor framing. This is where
the stair stringers or stairway connects to the floor, creating a smooth
transition. If you notice in the picture below, the black arrow is
pointing to a head out that is using a double microlam (engineered
lumber).
Whose Job Is It To Install A Stair Headout?
The framing carpenter is usually responsible for installing the stairs
and floor framing components like the headout. If you're working on a
custom home, where you have a group of Carpenters working together, to
build an individual house, anyone of the Carpenters could install the
headout.
When I worked on tract built homes (building more than a few homes at
one time), a carpenter, referred to as a floor joister would install the
upper floor and the stair headout. It wasn't the stair builders job to
install any part of the floor or frame any of the larger walls.
