Headout - Stair Framing And Construction

The stair headout is usually located within the upper floor framing. This is where the stair stringers or stairway connects to the floor, creating a smooth transition. If you notice in the picture below, the black arrow is pointing to a head out that is using a double microlam (engineered lumber).

Whose Job Is It To Install A Stair Headout?

The framing carpenter is usually responsible for installing the stairs and floor framing components like the headout. If you're working on a custom home, where you have a group of Carpenters working together, to build an individual house, anyone of the Carpenters could install the headout.

When I worked on tract built homes (building more than a few homes at one time), a carpenter, referred to as a floor joister would install the upper floor and the stair headout. It wasn't the stair builders job to install any part of the floor or frame any of the larger walls.
