Laser Plumb Bob - House Construction Tools

A laser plumb bob uses a laser light beam to help builders create level areas over long distances. These tools work great for building foundations, roads, T-bar ceiling installers and surveying. They also allow someone to work by themselves. If you were going to use a builders level, you would need one person to look through the building level and another person to hold the marking stick.

How Does It Work?

If you look at the picture above, you will notice a yellow box sitting on top of a tripod. This yellow box is the laser level itself and usually puts out a rotating laser beam that can be seen in every direction.

This box will stay in the one position and will not move, however, someone else can carry the marking stick around with them, hold it up right, a certain distance away from the laser level and observe the rotating light as it flashes onto your marking stick, providing you with a level reference point.

How Would You Use A Laser Plumb Bob For Stair Building?

It wouldn't be very useful for building a wood set of stairs in a two-story home, because you could use a regular bubble level, in most cases. However, if you were building a long stairway on the exterior of a property, a laser plumb bob or laser level would be helpful.

One of the problems with a regular handheld level is the fact that they're not always level or if they are level, they need to be held in the perfect position, every single time you make a mark for your next step.

A good example of this would be using a 2 foot level to mark 20 steps for a concrete stairway, without using a laser level. If you were only off 1/16 of an inch, each time you used the level to mark the next step, by the time he reached the top of the building, you would be off 1 1/4 inches.

Laser plumb bobs are going to provide you with an extremely accurate measurement for each step, in a situation like this.
