Left hand in the construction industry usually refers to
something on the left side. That's was easy right... now how do we know
which left side. Well, that part could be more difficult than you ever
imagined, because there are different methods used for different parts
of the house.

Let's focus on a set of stairs, since this is a
website about stairs. If you were standing at the bottom of the stairway
or walking up a set of stairs, everything on the left hand side is going
to be referred to as a left-hand part.
The same holds true for the other side, everything on the right side of
the stairway, while you're walking up the stairs or standing directly in
front of and facing the stairway, would be referred to as a right hand
type of handrail fitting and could also be used for other parts of the
stairs.
For Example: A left-handed volute would be on the left side of the
stairway. If you were walking up the stairs, you would grab the left
hand volute with your left hand. It doesn't get any simpler than that.
