A open stairway usually has a section of the stairs open.
The picture below provides you with the perfect example of a open
stairway design. To save yourself a lot of time, scroll down to the
bottom of the page and check out a closed stairway design. A simple
comparison of both stairways should provide you with a better
description.

What's Easier To Build, Open Stairs Or Closed
Stairs?
The overall time and money spent building a closed stairway will be less
than building an open one. It will probably take about the same amount
of time to frame both stairways. However, it will take the finish
carpenter a while longer to install the treads and risers ends and all
of the trim, on an open stairway.
Open stairs usually take more time to paint or stain also.
What Are The Benefits Of A Open Stairway Design?
The only benefit I could possibly think of, would be the architectural
design or cosmetic effect of an open stairway. This is only my personal
opinion, but I think that open stairways look nicer and provide building
occupants with a more elegant stairway.
