Outdoor Stairs - Design And Construction

Outdoor stairs would be any set of stairs that was built outdoors. A good example of this would be any stairs leading to a deck, porch or part of a walkway. The picture below provides us with an excellent example of an outdoor set of stairs.

Outdoor stairs can be constructed out of wood, metal, concrete, brick's, rocks and plenty of other building materials. These stairs come in a variety of different shapes and sizes and should be maintained, for longevity.

Outdoor Stair Maintenance

Obviously concrete, rock or brick stairs aren't going to require as much maintenance as the ones built out of wood or metal. Regular scheduled maintenance should increase the life of exterior stairs, but there's no guarantees.

If you have a wood or metal stairway that needs to be painted, stained or treated in any way, you should plan on doing it as soon as possible. Sometimes a little tender loving care can provide your financial pocketbook with more money to spend somewhere else.

Outdoor Stairway Design

Before you build a set of stairs on the outside of your home, make sure that you plan and design them accordingly. These stairways should also meet local Building and Planning Codes.

For Example: If you're planning on building a stairway, next to your home, make sure that you're not breaking any Planning Department rules. Most Planning Departments have a minimum distance requirement, for each side of your house, to the building lot property lines.

I lived in a home that had a 25 foot easement from my house to the backyard property line and it was exactly 25 feet. That means I couldn't build anything on the back of my home, without getting special approval from the Planning Department first.
