Second Floor - House Building Instructions

This is usually the second level of a building. The top of the first stairway will attach to the second floor, while the bottom of the stairway attaches to the first level or floor. If you have a three level house, the bottom of the second set of stairs will attach to the second floor, while the top of the second stairway attaches to the third floor.

Stair Designs For Small Three-Story Homes

Whenever you're working in a large city with populations approaching or over one million people, it's not uncommon to find three-story homes, built right next to each other. Believe it or not, I was in one of them that was only 12 feet wide, located in San Francisco, California.

Since most building codes require a 36 inch minimum stairway, the design of the staircase is going to be critical.

1. Keep these stairs to a minimum width and distance, without breaking any building codes and still providing an acceptable level of comfort, while using the stairs.

2. This is a biggie, but rarely taken into consideration, when space is minimal. You must be able to move large furniture like sofas, tables and mattresses up the stairs. Eliminate any sharp turns if possible that will create a furniture moving problem.

The person we visited in San Francisco, loved to play the piano, but could only store the piano in the garage, because there was no access and there was never going to be any way to access another floor, without spending a large sum of money.
