| The best possible
advice I could give anyone who's planning on building their own set of
stairs is to "Think Safety." It's always going to work out better in the
long run, to take a little more time and clean the area that you're
planning on working in, before you start building your stairs.
I learned this lesson, from a framing contractor, when I was 18 years
old. He would make everyone, who worked on his projects, clean the job
up at the end of every day. In the beginning, I moaned and groaned and
complained like everyone else, but after a while, I realized that this
master carpenter and wise contractor, was right.
Try to avoid working in unsafe conditions and if you need to purchase
another tool or additional building materials, to get the job done
properly, then do it. Sometimes spending a few extra dollars, could save
you a lot of money, especially if you were ever involved in a
construction accident.
Like I said earlier, I've been building stairs for more than three
decades and I know what I can and cannot get away with, but you probably
don't. It isn't worth it and I don't recommend taking any chances.
This even becomes a bigger problem, on job sites where you might have
witnessed other construction workers, doing something stupid, but you're
going to try it anyway. Don't even think about it and like I said,
"Always Think Safety," no matter what you're doing.
It might take a little longer and it might even cost you a little more
money, but in the long run, you will recognize the value of safety and
even start to share your knowledge with others.
