Minimum Stair Clearance
The building code minimum stair clearance for headroom is 6 feet 8
inches.
Exception: Spiral staircases have a minimum headroom
clearance of 6'6".
Example: The minimum headroom clearance is measured from
the front of the stair tread nosing, to the bottom of the ceiling. It
can also be measured by placing a straight edge on top of the stair
treads. Look at the illustration of the two get a better idea of what
I'm talking about.
Over the years I have found that most architects building in tight
quarters and narrow building lots seem to have limited space for the
stairway design. This will require contractors to have the
foresight and experience to solve these problems before it is too late.
These are difficult problems to foresee before you start building.
Attention: Don't forget to check with your local
building department to verify any building codes on this website. This
information could be incorrect or outdated. Building codes are updated
regularly and to some building departments have different
interpretations for certain building codes.
