Framing Hammer

A good framing hammer head weight is between 20 and 24 ounces. The Framing hammer I have been using for years has been a 22 ounces. The face of the framing hammer is corrugated or rough , this helps with gripping the nails a little better when you're driving into a piece of wood. A smooth face on a hammer will cause the hammer to slip more frequently off the nail.

In building a set of stairs for the rough framing part use a corrugated face Framing hammer. For the finish end of building the stairway use a smooth face hammer, the reason for this is if you mess the nail head with a corrugated framing hammer you will soon find yourself sanding your wood finish material to remove the hammer marks left from your hammer.
