Tread And Riser Angles

I created a tread and riser angle chart to provide you with the angle of a stairway, using different treads and risers. For example, if you're going to use a 12 inch stair tread (this would be the depth of the stair step, not the width of the stairway) and a 5 1/2 inch riser (this would be the height of each step), the stairway would have a 24° angle. Stairs with larger angles are going to be harder to use than once with smaller angles.

Stair Tread Width Stair Riser Height Angle Or Slope

12 - 1/2 Inches 5 - Inches 22 degrees
12 - 1/4 Inches 5 - 1/4 Inches 23 degrees
12 - Inches 5 - 1/2 Inches 24 degrees
11 - 3/4 Inches 5 - 3/4 Inches 26 degrees
11 - 1/2 Inches 6 - Inches 27 degrees
11 - 1/4 Inches 6 - 1/4 Inches 29 degrees
11- Inches 6 - 1/2 Inches 30 degrees
10 - 3/4 Inches 6 - 3/4 Inches 32 degrees
10 - 1/2 Inches 7 - Inches 33 degrees
10 - 1/4 Inches 7 - 1/4 Inches 35 degrees
10 - Inches 7 - 1/2 Inches 36 degrees
9 - 3/4 Inches 7 - 3/4 Inches 38 degrees
9 - 1/2 Inches 8 - Inches 40 degrees
9 - 1/4 Inches 8 - 1/4 Inches 41 degrees
9 - Inches 8 - 1/2 Inches 43 degrees
