Wood and Concrete Apartment Stairs

I don't know what it is about concrete stair treads and wood stringers, but if they're not maintained or built correctly, you're going to have problems. I've been building stairs for over three decades and have a pretty good idea what's going to happen to them, if they're designed or assembled incorrectly.

Concrete Stair Tread Installation Tips

1. Make sure that they are positioned correctly and have the same rise and run for each individual stair tread. I've seen plenty of them slapped together, often creating safety hazards. It's not uncommon to see these stair steps at odd angles and tilting in a variety of different directions.

2. Make sure that their level. Believe it or not, I was working on one job, where I put together the stair stringers and someone else attach the concrete treads, to the metal brackets that I had attached, to the wood stringers. The foreman called me over and demanded an explanation for the stair treads that weren't level.

I took a look around and it didn't take me long to realize that the metal inside of the pre-manufactured concrete stair treads wasn't flat and this was creating the problem.

You're probably not going to find this hard to believe, especially, if you've worked in the construction industry as long as I have. On these particular stairs, I actually provided the concrete stair tread installers with a few pencil marks, showing them exactly where each stair treads needed to be positioned.

Talking about making the next person's job as easy as possible, and they still messed it up.
